How they work
You simply choose which of your existing phone numbers you want your 0845 to be linked to. So when your customers calls, their call is instantly and automatically redirected to your selected ‘destination’ number. And, for maximum convenience and flexibility, you can change this number as often as you’d like to – absolutely free.
This means that, for example, if you move to new premises or you need your 0845 calls rerouted to another phone for a while (perhaps when you’re away from the office on business), your 0845 is unchanged and your clients are none the wiser.
0845 numbers are sometimes called ‘non-geographical numbers’ (NGN for short) because these numbers don’t designate a particular town or area, unlike 0207 and 0208, for example.
You don’t need to buy additional kit or rent additional phone lines
Naturally, you can continue using the phone your 0845 is linked to, exactly as you did previously – that’s for incoming and outgoing calls. All the call rerouting is done by Planet Telecom remotely (and automatically) so your normal phone service carries on uninterrupted.

What customers pay to call your 0845
From 1st July 2015, Ofcom introduced new rules for companies offering their customers 0845 numbers as the way to contact them. It’s designed to make the cost of using them clearer to consumers.
Essentially, the cost of these calls is split into two parts: firstly, the advertised per minute charge that your customers pay for the calls – 5p in the case of a Planet Telecom 0845.
The second part is their phone network’s per minute access charge that your customers pay to eg BT or EE etc.
At the moment, however, most BT residential landline call plans include 0845 calls for free.

So In practice, the new rules simply mean you have to clearly state the first part of the call’s cost right by the number, anywhere you advertise it – websites, advertising, packaging, vehicles and so on – in a certain way…
The suggested wording you could use for a Planet Telecom 0845 would therefore be:
Calls cost just 5p a minute plus your phone company’s access charge.
You might want to add something along the lines of “Contact your phone company if you don’t know their access charge” although this isn’t compulsory.
