Oops, NASA Made a Mistake

Everyone makes mistakes, but you wouldn’t expect it from the worlds best scientists! A rather smart 17 year old school boy from Sheffield found a mistake in Nasa’s data recently. During an A Level Physics lesson, Miles spotted a discrepancy amongst the data from the radiation sensors on the International Space Station (ISS).

Missed by Nasa experts, found by school boy

His class were studying the spreadsheets as part of the Institute of Research in Schools’ (IRIS) TimPix project – a pioneering project which gives UK students the opportunity to work on real data from Nasa’s space station. The students’ aim is to analyse the data and pick out any anomalies and patterns which could lead to further discoveries. Miles realised the sensors were intermittently recording false data and emailed Nasa to bring the error to their attention.

The radiation data that Miles was analysing originated from Tim Peake’s recent stay on the station; Miles said “I went straight to the bottom of the list and I went for the lowest bits of energy there were.” He noticed the data has recorded -1 energy, which isn’t physically possible because you cannot get negative energy. As he looked closer, Miles noticed the sensors were recording incorrect data several times a day – something the Nasa experts hadn’t noticed, or at least didn’t think was happening so frequently. Miles’ correction was said to be “appreciated” by Nasa. What an inspiring story!
