The Switch to VoIP Phones Is Inevitable
A recent report by Vigour Times has highlighted that around two million customers have removed their landlines in support of new systems, while 160,000 were forced to switch each month starting April of last year.
BT agrees that the 40-year-old landline system has become obsolete and less reliable and must be replaced with modern and efficient technology. Its plan to switch to a fibre-optic alternative is an extension of the same plan, and it would ensure crystal clear calls and higher energy efficiency.
However, BT decided to halt the removal of landline phones until all customer concerns were addressed. Many complained that there were no fail-safes to keep the phones working in case of a blackout, while others criticized how BT distributed free mobile phones to landline-only users even though some were living in signal “not spots.”
Another issue that was brought up was how older systems still used landline technology to reach and send alerts to monitoring stations. This became a problem for elderly users of health alarms who couldn’t call for help when needed. The fact that old burglar alarms depended on the old lines also surfaced, forcing BT to re-evaluate its move to remove all landlines.
Therefore, the landline removal plan was postponed, and BT reassured customers that no one would have their landline turned off until these issues cleared out.
Here’s why VoIP phone systems are better
Traditional landlines differ from VoIP phone systems in four major ways. Let’s explore each to find out why everyone is switching from one to the other.
1. Better Features
Landline phones are based on analogue technology that uses a series of exchanges to send signals and connect calls between two phones. The system uses copper wire phone technology that hasn’t been upgraded since it was invented in the 19th century.
The analogue system restricts new features that other service providers can offer and are mostly limited to caller ID, call waiting, voicemail, and call blocking.
VoIP phones don’t use traditional copper wire connections but are connected using the same broadband internet connection that powers a router or computer. Since they don’t rely on physical exchanges like landlines, VoIP phones convert calls into digital signals within the handset.
VoIP systems are digital, which allows them to offer a wider range of useful features. Users can benefit from a virtual receptionist, three-digit dialling, automatic call forwarding, and much more.
2. Advanced Technology
As mentioned earlier, landline phones use copper wiring to connect calls. Unfortunately, this system hasn’t been upgraded in many years and has no chance of development in the future either. This has become a legacy that many phone operators aren’t willing or committed to upgrading.
Since technology is evolving at an alarming rate, it only makes sense to opt for a system that can incorporate technological changes and provide maximum benefit to users.
VoIP phone systems promote digital communication, the new standard in consumer and business technology. This is why more phone companies have set out to build a digital infrastructure for themselves.
3. Reliability
When the VoIP phone system was introduced, the main criticism it faced was the lack of reliability. This is one slight edge that traditional landlines have over VoIP phones. That being said, VoIP service providers are continuously working on bridging the gap between landline and VoIP reliability.
We are living in the digital age; hence high-speed internet is the backbone of all our systems. Rest assured, internet service providers are constantly improving their offerings to ensure a fail-safe system that doesn’t disappoint modern users.
4. Lower Costs
Did you know that VoIP services cost 40-80% less than traditional landline phone services?
While households require one landline phone, offices need to set up multiple phones, requiring a private branch exchange (PBX). This piece of equipment usually costs tens of thousands of pounds.
Moreover, landline telephone wiring can turn into a hassle quickly and take up valuable space.
VoIP systems are much cheaper, from installation to regular maintenance. Whether you need to install one in your home or workplace, this inexpensive solution is a modern alternative that offers more features and a better user experience.
